Cover: Ca2+ oscillations in the intact alveolus. A surface alveolus of a blood-perfused rat lung was loaded with fura 2-AM and then imaged by digital epifluorescence microscopy. The sequentially obtained images in pseudocolor reflect distribution of Ca2+ concentration in alveolar epithelial cells. At baseline (top row), the images depict no time-dependent changes of pseudocolor, hence of Ca2+. In the period after a single, 15-s lung expansion (middle and bottom rows), marked Ca2+ oscillations appear as reflected in time-dependent changes of pseudocolor from orange to green. From Ashino Y, Ying X, Dobbs LG, and Bhattacharya J. [Ca2+]i oscillations regulate type II cell exocytosis in the pulmonary alveolus. Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol 279: L5-L13, 2000.
